A rare beauty with serious botanical credentials. Tillandsia vanhyningii earned its species status in 2022 after decades of debate named after legendary Tillandsia collectors, the Van Hynings. This stunning air plant features short, succulent grey-green foliage densely packed with trichomes, crowned by deep purple tubular flowers each April.
Compact caulescent growth habit you won't find in other ionantha varieties. Perfect for mounting on cork, timber, or suspended displays.
Indoors: bright window with airflow. Outdoors: dappled light under trees, verandahs, or shadehouses. Needs good air circulation to dry between waterings. Cold-hardy but frost-sensitive—protect in winter.
Hot spot? Water every 2–3 days. Cool, humid spot? Once weekly works. Mist or dunk for 10–20 minutes, then shake dry. Never let water pool at the base. These plants love drying out completely between drinks.
